What Is Bounce And How Can It Help My Short Game?

What Is Bounce?

The bounce angle of a golf club, is the angle between the ground and the leading edge of the club. This angle varies depending on the type of sole you have on the wedge you use. Most manufacturers will have high, medium and low bounce options available to you.

High Bounce Wedges

A wedge with a higher bounce angle (where the leading edge is elevated) is generally fitted to players who tend to have a steeper angle of attack into the ball. Having the leading edge raised helps to prevent it from digging into the turf therefore allowing the club maintain speed if the ground is struck before the ball. This essentially increases the player’s margin of error and will achieve better results from mishit shots than perhaps a lower bounce wedge.

Lower Bounce Wedges

A wedge with a lower bounce angle (where the leading edge sits very close to the ground) is usually fitted to players who tend to pick the ball cleanly from the turf with a shallower angle of attack. Having the leading edge closer to the turf helps to ensure the leading edge slides under the ball. A higher bounce wedge would be unsuitable as the player may find it difficult to get the leading edge under the ball and would be more likely to 'thin' the shot.

Which Bounce Should I Use?

There are many factors to take into consideration when selecting the correct bounce and when looking to purchase, always get custom fit. One factor would be whether you are more of a ‘digger’ (steeper angle of attack) or a ‘slider’ (shallower angle of attack). Another factor could also the type of golf course you play at. For example a higher bounce wedge may suit a golf course with lush turf and thick rough as the raised leading edge will allow the club to slide through the thick rough with ease. If you play the majority of your wedge shots from tight, bare lies, (often found at links courses) you may benefit more from a lower bounce wedge as it will help you get the leading edge between the tight lie and the ball.

We are hopefully all aware of the importance of the short game. You are going to hit more shots with your wedges than you ever will with your driver, so when purchasing get custom fitted to ensure the wedges you select are going to help you optimise your performance into and around the greens.
