Aimpoint is renown for being on of the most simple yet effective green reading systems around, and having used it myself for the past few years, I can confirm its great for many golfers but maybe not all.
Aimpoint can be broken down into 3 simple steps
Firstly, you use your feet to esitmate the amount of slope in your putt, when you go on an Aimpoint clinic (it usually takes a couple of hours and you need to do it before attempting Aimpoint) the instructor will help you to understand what a 1%-5% gradient feels like. If you do not know what these feel like, you really have no chance of using Aimpoint to its full potential.
After feeling the gradient of the putt, you then use you arm and finger to determine where to aim.
Once you have established your Aimpoint, let the putt go and see it dive into the hole everytime.......well maybe not everytime but hopefully more than you are used too!
Now clearly this is very breif summary of how it works, if you would like to find out more about Aimpoint click here
Having used Aimpoint myself for the past few years, I can absolutely recommend it to most golfers. Where I found it really useful was eliminating doubt from my mind before hitting the putt, once you have selected the line you can immerse yourself with making a positive stroke and it certainly has allowed me to make more commited strokes over the year.
However, Aimpoint is based on hitting a putt at a certain speed, and as we all know if you hit a putt firmer it breaks less, and softer will break more. Therefore you can pick your Aimpoint all day long, but if you then hammer the putt way too hard, it is very unlikely the ball will go in. Bottom line is if your distance control is poor Aimpoint will not help you as much as it could and you would be better off working on that issue first.
The next issue is if your stroke is mechnically poor and you cannot consistently start the ball online. Once again, you could pick the perfect line, but if you are incapable of starting the ball there, the chances of holing the putt are slim at best.
I think Aimpoint is a fantastic tool to help any golfer with their putting, but those who will benefit most will be those with a mechanically sound stroke, if you are thinking of attending an Aimpoint clinic but want to brush up on your technique first, dont hesitate to get in touch here
