To play this shot effectively, a shallow angle of approach that presents plenty of loft is required.
I am addressing the ball using my most lofted wedge with my hands level at address. This is the position I am looking to return the club too at impact with minimal shaft lean. This will help me present plenty of loft to pop the ball into the air.
I have slightly more pressure favouring my left side to ensure I create a crisp downward strike on the ball.
Backswing
I create a slightly earlier wrist hinge than normal to create more speed at the bottom of the swing arc which is required to pop the ball high into the air with spin.
I must however ensure that I release the hinge at the bottom of the arc or I will run the risk of driving the leading edge into the turf behind the ball (fatting the shot) or hitting the shot low on the face (thinning the shot).
Impact
Maintaining the same amount of weight over the left side throughout the swing is key as moving too much weight forwards may de loft the club and moving weight back is likely to create mis strikes.
I have released the angles created by my wrists in the downswing which allows me to get back to my setup position and present plenty of loft to the ball.
DO NOT try to help the ball into the air by scooping with your right hand. This often causes the club to bottom out too early resulting in poorly struck shots.
Finish
I ensure my chest and hips face the target after the shot This is a clear indicator that my body has continued rotating through impact which is key for consistent strikes and effective distance control.
